Abstract

The study investigates if increasing the intake pressure and utilizing a different injector nozzle
configuration can result in increased efficiency while using 20% biodiesel in internal combustion engines. Under
both normal induction and enhanced intake pressure conditions, the performance, combustion, and emission
characteristics of a four-stroke compression ignition engine using a blend of pongamia methyl ester and diesel as
fuel were investigated. The engine was equipped with three distinct fuel injectors, each with a different number
and size of nozzle holes. This work has addressed the performance and combustion factors, including peak
cylinder pressure, exhaust gas temperature, air fuel ratio, ignition delay, braking thermal efficiency, and emission
parameters, including NOx and smoke opacity. The data generated indicates an improvement in both
performance and smoke emission.
